October 8 at 8:31 AM In 1491 (Pre-Columbus) an estimated 19 million indigenous people populated “North America”. By 1892 there were only an estimated 300,000 left. They didn't move to Hawaii. They endured a holocaust so “efficient” that Hitler himself found inspiration in it. 😥 Yet their story is largely forgotten, ignored, & obfuscated. Today we remember & honor the beautiful indigenous people of the land we call America while mourning the legacy of colonialism, oppression, & genocide that Christopher Columbus represents. We stand in solidarity with & amplify *their stories*, not the stories of violent oppressors. Because in the words of Laguna Pueblo Tribe poet Leslie Silko, "Their evil is mighty but it can't stand up to our stories. So they try to destroy the stories. Let the stories be confused or forgotten. They would like that... Because we would be defenseless then...." #IndigenousPeoplesDay #HistoryMatters #HistoryFromTheMargins
